La Mezcla is Melissa Muniz's creative practice where movement, culture, and personal expression come together. This documentary follows the making of the class's newest original choreographic work, capturing the creative journey from first rehearsal through final performance.

The Occasion

“Everyday People”

La Mezcla is presented as part of Everyday People, a Dance 101 production celebrating the extraordinary potential within ordinary lives.

At its heart, Everyday People was a celebration of community and the human spirit. It honored the courage to step onto a stage, the joy of creative expression, and the connections that form when people move together.

The production was dedicated to Dance 101’s vibrant and beautifully diverse dance community.

A finished performance can feel immediate, but it is built gradually.

La Mezcla developed through three distinct phases of training. Each phase brought Melissa Muniz’s vision closer to its final form while developing the strength, precision, trust, and shared awareness of the ensemble.

The Process

01 / Foundation

The process began by establishing the physical language of the piece.

The dancers learned its essential steps, rhythms, and movement patterns. Through repetition, the choreography moved beyond something remembered and became something understood by the body.

This foundation gave each dancer the confidence to move forward while creating a common language for the ensemble.

02 / Formation

Individual movements began to connect, and the larger composition took shape.

Sequences were refined. Transitions became clearer. Timing and spacing became collective rather than individual. As the dancers learned to respond to one another, separate performances developed into a unified expression.

Melissa’s vision was no longer only an idea. It had become something the ensemble could carry together.

03 / Expression

Once the structure was secure, the dancers could move beyond execution and fully inhabit the work.

Precision remained important, but the focus expanded to include intention, character, and emotional presence. The stage introduced new energy through music, costumes, space, and the immediacy of a live audience.

Preparation became performance, and Melissa’s vision became something shared.

The Heartbeat

Before the dancers move, the rhythm begins.

The drummers give La Mezcla its pulse, creating the energy that carries the choreography forward and connects the ensemble in real time. Their sound is not simply an accompaniment to the movement. It is an active presence within the work.

Each beat becomes a signal, a conversation, and a source of momentum. The dancers respond with their bodies, transforming rhythm into gesture and sound into movement.

Together, the drummers and dancers create something neither could produce alone: a living exchange at the heart of the performance.
